Just after 1 a.m. Saturday, May 11, a motor vehicle vs. pedestrian collision was reported on Cove Road near Van Buskirk Ave. The initial witness said that a dark-colored BMW had been traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Cove Road, said Sgt. Jeffrey Booth, Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad-Reconstructionist/Supervisor for the Stamford Police Department.
In the area of Van Buskirk Avenue, the BMW failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway and mounted the sidewalk where it struck a pedestrian, who was thrown into the street and came to rest in the northbound lane of Cove Road, Booth said.
The operator of the BMW then placed the pedestrian in his vehicle and drove him less than a mile away to the area of 300 Seaside Ave., where he dropped him off and fled the scene, according to Booth.
Witnesses had given an initial description of the vehicle and a license plate.
Officer Rebecca Schneider observed a dark-colored BMW traveling westbound on East Main Street with a plate very similar to what was reported by the witnesses. She initiated a motor vehicle stop and was able to determine that this was the vehicle involved. The vehicle had front-end damage consistent with striking someone and there was a cell phone, later determined to belong to the pedestrian, still stuck between the windshield and the hood, according to Booth.
The operator of the BMW, identified as, Carlos Campo, of Van Buskirk Avenue in Stamford, admitted to striking the pedestrian, Booth said. He also showed signs of intoxication and did not successfully perform field sobriety tests, according to Booth. He was placed into custody and transported to the Stamford Police Department. Mr. Campo ultimately submitted to a breath test and his BAC was .203 percent then .201 percent, both well above the legal limit of .08 percent, Booth said.
Campo was charged with: second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, operating under the influence, evading responsibility, reckless operation, and operating with a suspended license. He was held on a $10,000 bond.
The pedestrian, a 22-year-old Stamford resident, was transported to the hospital with what were determined to be serious, but non-life threatening injuries. He is currently being treated at Stamford Hospital.
